Can You Hear Me Now?

May 15, 2008 / by Westbrook4MVP

As civilization has evolved, it appears that the Earth has shrunk dramatically.  Cellular phones and the internet has made communication easier than ever.  But many people question whether or not it is in our best interests to have such readily available technology.  With software such as GoogleEarth allowing one to see what is going on outside of one's house, do we have any privacy anymore?

One of the most influential inventions of my generation is the cellular phone.  Whether walking to class or in line at the grocery store, the odds are dramatically high that someone will be engaged in a conversation on their cell phone.  A result of this is that everyone can hear the conversation that someone is having, limiting their privacy and invading upon our own.  We are now constantly inundated with conversation that is foreign to us and we are subjected to conversations involving inside-jokes and whether or not the trash was taken out in time.  I am unable to understand most of the conversations around me on phones just the same as I cannot understand numerous foreign languages.  It appears as if talking on a cellular phone has become a universal language...everyone is speaking it, including myself.

Cellular phones are becoming more advanced and are capable of performing new and amazing tasks.  With internet access readily available cellular phones can teach us how to translate a conversation we might be having with someone in France.  This technology is allowing us to communicate more effectively and at quicker speeds in order to keep up with the ever changing world around us.  So despite speaking "native languages" on the phone, we are all speaking the same language, cell phone.  And while we are losing our privacy and allowing others to hear the stories of our lives in doing so, no one around us understands the very same language that they are speaking.
